A New Chapter · 2026

Powerful is becoming a web design cooperative.

After two decades partnering with cooperatives, municipal utilities, and public power, we're adopting the governance model our partners have always lived by — to preserve who we are, and to deepen our commitment to the organizations and communities we serve.

Preservation · Above All Else

Future-proofing what we've built.

The story of Powerful's growth is bigger than any one person — founders included.

Over the years, we've been approached by industry peers, other agencies, and private equity firms. We knew, each time, that none of those paths served the utility organizations we partner with or the team members who build our work.

Preserving our culture, our core values, and our commitment to the cooperative and public power sector matters above all else. This is the path that most aligns with our own principles.

We're choosing the structure that protects what we are — not the one that optimizes for someone else's exit.

Why Cooperative Governance

The model our partners have always lived by.

For more than twenty years, our partners have been cooperatives, municipal utilities, public power districts, and the associations that serve them — organizations built on democratic, member-driven governance. Adopting that same structure isn't a rebrand. It's structural alignment with the people whose work we support.

Cooperative governance keeps decision-making close to the people doing the work and the organizations being served. It embeds our values in how the company is owned and governed, rather than relying on any individual to defend them. And it makes preservation durable — beyond any one person, and beyond any one chapter.

The Seven Cooperative Principles

A framework recognized by our partners — and now by us.

First articulated by the Rochdale pioneers and adopted globally, the cooperative principles shape how we'll govern, hire, and serve.

Principle 01

Voluntary & Open Membership

Cooperatives are open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership.

Principle 02

Democratic Member Control

Members actively participate in setting policies and making decisions, with elected representatives accountable to the membership.

Principle 03

Member Economic Participation

Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative.

Principle 04

Autonomy & Independence

Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members — on terms that preserve democratic control.

Principle 05

Education, Training & Information

Cooperatives provide education and training for their members so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperative.

Principle 06

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Cooperatives serve their members most effectively by working together through local, regional, national, and international structures.

A Hybrid Membership Model

Built around the people who build for us — and the people who work with us.

Powerful Cooperative is being structured to include both the team members who build and support our products and the utility organizations we partner with. Each class of membership reflects a different relationship to the cooperative — and a different way of participating in its governance.

The cooperative is the team.

Socially Responsible Employment

Sustaining the team that sustains our partners.

Balance is a core value. We've built our benefits around the idea that good work is done by people whose lives outside of work are protected and supported.

Recognized · Always Striving

Trusted by more than 300 community-owned organizations.

Inc. 5000 honoree. Most Loved Workplace certified. Award-winning websites across the cooperative and public power sectors. The recognition reflects the work — and the work reflects the people doing it.

Governance · In Progress

Bylaws are currently in legal review.

We're collaborating with cooperative counsel to do this right — building the governance architecture for a cooperative meant to outlast any single chapter of leadership.

What's Ahead

Powerful Media Group, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary.

In the coming months, Powerful Cooperative, Inc. will acquire Powerful Media Group, LLC. With this acquisition, Powerful Media Group will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the cooperative.

The transition enables the cooperative to develop formal curriculum and training programs for team members — investing in the people who build and support partner organizations, and embedding cooperative education (the fifth principle) into how we grow.
